When sitting, the ankle pump exercises work the calf muscles and help pump the fluid away. Try to put equal weight through each leg and 'push off' from your toes on each step (those patients who have been told to limit their weight bearing cannot do this). Have a rest on the bed after lunch for an hour. Cushions under the foot of the mattress or blocks under the legs at the bottom of the bed will mean that gravity will help drainage. When sitting down you can elevate your legs on a stool to help reduce the swelling. You may also use ice packs for 10-15 minutes every hour.
