Student volunteering

We are very proud that we are able to offer students a volunteer experience that will benefit them in their choice of career in medicine or nursing.

Students that volunteer with us have the chance to experience a clinical environment and see the workings of a hospital. They get to interact with patients and staff including consultants and nurses.

Roles include Patient Journey Support on our Dufferin ward and in our Day Services Unit (DSU) and an Outpatient Assistant.

The Patient Journey Support role involves offering support and assistance to our patients. It involves chatting to them about their operation and recovery, helping to unpack belongings and ensuring they are comfortable in their room.

The Outpatient Assistant role is to support the staff and consultants in the outpatients’ area. Tasks include filing medical records following the patient’s appointment, offering assistance to Consultants and helping the outpatient’s staff as required. It is an ideal environment to see consultant’s working and see the patient flow through a hospital.

We are happy to consider volunteers aged 16 or over but you must have a mature attitude to fit the role. We try to be as flexible as we can around school and college life but we would ask that you are sure you can commit to a volunteer role with us before you apply.

Please contact us at to discuss opportunities further.

Bethany Goodfellows

I joined the Horder Centre in January 2015 because of a school voluntary programme that was due to last for 3 months and I enjoyed it so much that not only have I continued my role but picked up another one since. Although it seems cliche, I have definitely made some new friends and always feel welcome as well as appreciated by the staff on both Reception and the Dufferin Ward.

With a keen interest in medicine, the weekly interaction I have with patients is very valuable and has also helped me to develop and become a more confident and compassionate person. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to help out at such a wonderful place.
