Professional profile

Gemma graduated from the University of Cardiff in 2008 gaining her BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy. She started out her career working within the NHS, where she completed the core rotations in Rehabilitation, Burns and Plastics, Hand Therapy and Musculoskeletal Outpatients.

Alongside working within the NHS, Gemma worked at The Horder Centre as a member of the bank therapy team within the inpatient department. This provided her with valuable experience in post-op rehabilitation.

Gemma’s keen interest now lies within Musculoskeletal and Sports Injury Rehabilitation and she joined the Outpatient team here at The Horder Centre in 2011 to pursue this interest. Gemma is also a member of the ACPSM (Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports and Exercise Medicine).

Gemma has worked with a number of men’s and ladies’ football teams across Sussex providing her with valuable sports injury management experience to bring to her role within the department. Gemma is also a certified user of kinesiology taping for sports injuries.

Dealing with common football injuries

Football injuries can be caused by a direct impact, for example following a tackle or non-impact such as twisting awkwardly. It’s often the combination of physical contact and moving and twisting at high speeds that can cause problems.
