Our Sustainability Pillars
Our three core sustainability objectives are:
Reducing Our Footprint
Achieving net zero carbon through sustainable resource use.
Wellbeing for All
Enhancing the health and wellbeing of patients, staff, and communities.
Building a Resilient Future
Strengthening long-term financial stability through responsible environmental choices.
Our Net Zero Journey
We have set out our goals and are taking steps to achieve:
- Net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035
- Net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2045
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact through targeted investments that improve energy efficiency, lower carbon emissions, and support our journey toward Net Zero.
Solar Energy Investment
We have installed 753 solar panels at The Horder Centre, generating a renewable energy supply that will provide around one-third of the hospital’s total electricity consumption. This major investment reduces reliance on grid electricity, cuts operational carbon emissions, and contributes meaningfully to our Net Zero goals.
Upgrading to Energy‑Efficient LED Lighting
As part of a structured upgrade programme, 60% of fluorescent lighting across all three hospital sites has now been replaced with energy‑efficient LED technology. This transition significantly reduces energy consumption, lowers maintenance requirements, and enhances lighting quality for patients, staff, and visitors.
Improved Building Management Systems
The Building Management Systems (BMS) at both The Horder Centre and The McIndoe Centre have been upgraded to strengthen control, monitoring, and energy efficiency. Optimised set‑points ensure systems operate only when required, and non‑essential equipment now runs on automated schedules with strategic setbacks to minimise waste. These improvements reduce energy use, lower operating costs, and create a more comfortable and responsive environment for patients and staff, supporting our wider sustainability and Net Zero commitments.
Enhancing the health and well-being of patients, staff, and communities.
We believe that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment, but also about creating healthier spaces and supporting the wellbeing of the people we care for and employ. Our work focuses on improving patient experience, supporting our dedicated staff, and contributing positively to the communities we serve.
Supporting Our Workforce
We recognise that staff wellbeing is essential to delivering outstanding care. By investing in healthier workplaces, improved facilities, and supportive environments, we aim to create a culture where our people feel valued, respected, and able to thrive.
We’ve introduced a new Wellness Room to create a calm, multi‑purpose space designed to support staff wellbeing. Whether for quiet rest, breastfeeding, prayer, or a moment to reset, the room offers a private, inclusive environment that helps our people feel supported throughout the working day. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to creating healthier, more compassionate workplaces for everyone.
Positive Impact in Our Communities
We are committed to supporting local initiatives that improve community wellbeing, enhance access to nature, and promote healthier lifestyles. Through new partnerships and collaborative projects, we are helping create greener, more connected spaces across our local area.
- Green Gym Project with TCV
With funding secured from both our Hospital Charity Fund and The National Lottery, we are partnering with TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) to support the Green Gym programme — an evidence‑based initiative that improves people’s health and wellbeing through outdoor conservation activities.
TCV Green Gyms provide free, guided outdoor sessions where volunteers take part in activities such as tree planting, habitat management, and creating wildlife‑friendly spaces, offering proven physical, mental, and social benefits.
This collaboration enables us to bring meaningful, nature‑based wellbeing opportunities to our patients, staff, and the wider community.
- Working with Green Transition Crowborough (GTC)
We are proud to work alongside Green Transition Crowborough, a community‑led organisation driving local climate action and sustainability initiatives across the town. GTC focuses on areas such as energy, transport, wildlife, food, waste reduction, and community engagement.
By supporting their events and local projects, we help strengthen community resilience, promote greener living, and create opportunities for residents to get involved in environmental action.
