It was clear by March 2000 that the original operating theatre was becoming outdated and the surgical wards were struggling to cope with the rapidly increasing work load. With a single operating facility it was impossible to upgrade the old theatre without shutting down surgery for nine months an unacceptable way forward.
The answer was to build an entirely new operating theatre and the new Chief Executive lost no time in drawing up plans to turn this into reality. A major appeal for funds was launched and by the time the new twin theatre complex was opened in 2003 together with other major works half the capital required to pay for this work had been raised. The original operating unit was then rebuilt into a state of the art day surgery unit ready to treat the increasing numbers of patients who are nowadays looked after as day cases.
